The War in Ukraine: An Ecological Catastrophe of Planetary Scale

War affects not only people and infrastructure. It also damages nature and creates a global environmental crisis. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has faced enormous emissions, forest fires, soil contamination, destroyed industrial sites and polluted water systems.

Explosions, mining, fuel burning and the destruction of infrastructure release toxic substances into air, soil and water. Ecosystems that took decades to form can be damaged in a single day.

The environmental consequences of war do not stop at borders. Polluted rivers, air emissions, biodiversity loss and climate impacts concern the whole region.

Documenting this damage is essential for justice and recovery. Ukraine’s reconstruction must include environmental restoration as a core priority, not an optional addition.
