The Hidden Cost of M&Ms: How Ultra-Processed Products Harm the Environment

If you look at the label of a regular pack of M&Ms, you will recognize familiar ingredients: sugar, skimmed milk, cocoa butter. But next to them are dozens of less familiar names: gum arabic, dextrin, carnauba wax, soy lecithin, and colorant E100. In total, M&Ms contain 34 ingredients sourced from at least 30 countries around the world, from Côte d’Ivoire to New Zealand. Each ingredient has its own production chain: cocoa is processed into cocoa mass, sugar cane becomes sugar, and petroleum products become blue food coloring. Later, all of them are brought together in a centralized facility and turned into the colored candies known to millions of people. Behind this “sweet” production lies a complex environmental reality.

From Cocoa to Colorants: How the M&Ms Footprint Is Formed

Cocoa, sugar, milk and palm oil are agricultural commodities already known as major sources of emissions. Since 1850, agricultural expansion has caused 90% of global deforestation and about 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. Cocoa production is especially problematic. Even sustainable development programs by Mars do not remove the core issue: the model of large-scale agricultural production remains difficult to reconcile with sustainability. Chemically created ingredients are another sign of ultra-processing. M&Ms use 13 different colorants, including E132 and E133, which are produced in China and India from petroleum products. Soy lecithin is obtained through heating, chemical purification and hydrogen peroxide treatment. Dextrose, a sweetener, is produced through acid breakdown of corn and recrystallization. Behind every candy stands a complex network of production, transport, energy use and pollution. The environmental footprint of a small sweet is therefore much larger than it seems. It includes land use, water consumption, energy, logistics, packaging and the hidden cost of industrial food systems.
