Solar Energy for Schools: The Untapped Potential of Ukrainian Roofs

There are over 12,000 schools in Ukraine. Most of them have large flat roofs—the ideal location for installing solar power plants. But this potential remains largely untapped. According to estimates by SolarPower Europe, the potential for rooftop solar power plants in Ukraine reaches 238 GW. This is several times more than the country consumes during peak hours. Even partial realization of this potential in educational institutions could change the situation: schools could achieve energy independence, reduce costs, and set an example for their communities.

Why schools, specifically?

• Energy security: The educational process will not be interrupted even in the event of blackouts.
• Financial savings: Money previously spent on electricity can be redirected toward educational programs or modernization.
• Environmental education: Children see how theoretical knowledge about renewable energy is put into practice at their school.
• Contribution to green recovery: Every school with a solar power plant reduces CO₂ emissions and brings Ukraine closer to its climate goals.

The “School Under the Sun” pilot project.

The Glossary Eco Foundation is launching a pilot project in Monastyryska (Ternopil Oblast) on September 1, 2025. A solar power plant with a capacity of over 30 kW has been installed on the roof of a local school.

It will:
• reduce electricity bills by tens of thousands of hryvnias each year;
• prevent the emission of approximately 52 metric tons of CO₂ annually;
• ensure that children can continue their education without interruption, even during emergency power outages.

Untapped potential.

This pilot project is just the beginning. If at least 10% of Ukrainian schools were to receive their own solar power plants, this would mean thousands of sites contributing to energy independence. And full-scale implementation could become a true energy revolution for Ukraine’s education system.
